Choirs
We value the mixed economy of traditional choral and congregational music alongside more contemporary forms of worship music. There are opportunities for choral singers to be involved on a regular, frequent, or more occasional basis as follows.
1115 core choir On a weekly basis a small choir lead congregational singing at the 1115 service, and pop in the occasional choir item. Repertoire ranges from traditional hymnody through lyrical worship songs to music from the Iona & Northumbria communities, and music from contemporary Roman Catholic composers, such as Bernadette Farrell & Christopher Walker.
Most singers in this choir are able to participate weekly, but we welcome those who could contribute less frequently. We tend to rehearse in church from 1930-2130 on the Wednesday after the first Monday of each month, and on the third Monday of each month, and at 1045 on Sundays before the service (please check the website calendar for details). We'd love to welcome new regular members, so do get in touch if this might be you.
1115 special choir On the first Sunday of each month they are joined by a wider pool of singers who form the 1115 special choir, in order to tackle some more ambitious choral music than is normally possible on a weekly basis. Recent repertoire has included movements from Handel's Messiah, Stainer's Crucifixion, Tudor composers and the Russian Orthodox church alongside liturgical music from a range of composers. This choir have made a stunning impact, and the first Sunday has become something of a musical highlight for singers, congregation and Music Director alike!
The membership of this group is always fluid - we simply gather together whoever is available! We will usually try to rehearse beforehand (usually at one of the 1115 choir rehearsals), and on the day of the service at 1030 in church. Please get in touch if you're interested.
St Andrew's Singers Building on the success of the regular 'Carols by Candlelight' choir, Peter Gunstone decided to gather this larger pool of singers (numbering about 50) together on an occasional basis. Peter aims to plan 1 or 2 major choral performances each year in addition to the Christmas festivities! In 2009, the choir performed parts 2 & 3 of Handel's Messiah, and Durufle's Requiem, Vaughan Williams' Mystical Songs with Dvorak Biblical songs in 2010.
The great thing about this choir is that it can be totally open to absolutely anyone! The Easter Concerts in 2009 & 2010 drew together people's colleagues, friends and relatives to work together towards a common desire to sing and perform music.
