Why Atheism is unconvincing
Four reasons why I find atheism unconvincing
1. it gives a highly improbable account of the world. If there is no God, then the whole universe was brought about by accident with no design or plan behind it and no purpose to be achieved. Things therefore that are important to us like our science, our music, our ability to think, our morality are all in some sense accidental, the byproduct of mere movements of atoms. Can we believe Bertrand Russell 'Only on the foundation of unyielding despair can the soul's habitation safely be built.' ? But that is what atheism involves.
2. It relies far too heavily on Darwinism. Darwin was not an atheist but many of his followers think evolution removes God. Not at all. Evolution is 'development with difference' . When you find such development it is rational to expect a designer, as with the development of, say, the bicycle...Many evolutionists believe in God behind the evolutionary process: many do not. Asa Grey, for instance, the distinguished colleague of Darwin, was both an evolutionist and a convinced Christian. Stephen Jay Gould, the most distinguished of recent evolutionists and an agnostic, has made it abundantly clear that ' the science of Darwinism is fully compatible with religious beliefs - and equally compatible with atheism.'
3.It gives a dangerously inadequate account of human beings. If humans are no more than the products of atoms in suspension, you have a choice. Either be charming and kind to them, or else seek to liquidate them, as many of the the atheist rulers like Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao have done. Your choice is a matter of personal preference. Once atheism becomes the creed of a state, that state is prone to tyranny - think of the Reign of Terror which so soon erupted after France went officially atheist in the French Revolution.
4. It is unpersuasive because it is so old fashioned, boring and socially irrelevant. It belongs to the 'Modernist' worldview, now almost universally discarded in favour of postmodernity. It is not content with being one belief among many; it insists it is right and rubbishes every other belief. And that does not appeal to today's society which rejects all metanarratives and revels in the diversity of different interpretations. Atheism seeks to reimpose an intellectual straitjacket and shouts shrilly about the infantile beliefs of those who think otherwise. It is also boring and socially ineffective. Boring because atheists have little else to say except that there is no God. They have failed to articulate an imaginative picture of a godless future which is capable of exciting people and making them want to work together, celebrate and serve others. And atheism is boring, like old black and white TV - Christianity gives you colour. As CS Lewis put it "I believe in Christianity as I believe the sun has risen. Not simply because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." Atheism does not enable you to see much else. I advise you to avoid it!
